Soojin earned her Bachelor’s at Yale, her MPP at Harvard’s Kennedy School, and her MBA from Ross. She worked at Deloitte Consulting before joining Ross’s admissions team in 2004, and has been Director since 2006. She writes an outstanding blog and has an equally outstanding YouTube channel, which I highly recommend. Welcome, Soojin! Can you give us an overview of Ross’s fulltime MBA program?  [1:20] There are three things that differentiate us from other programs. First is our focus on learning by doing. If you’re someone who likes to get their hands dirty and learns best by experiential learning, this is a great program for you. Second, we have a great strength across the board in business specializations. (USNews ranked us second behind Stanford for most top-ranked specializations.) And third, being part of the University of Michigan, we have access to top-ranked graduate programs across disciplines (law, education, etc.), so there are a lot of interdisciplinary education opportunities. What’s new at Ross?  [2:50] We have a new dean! Scott DeRue, who was a longtime management and organizations professor here. Since he came from inside Ross, he really knows our community here. He’s creating a vision for our students – he wants students to have experience advising, investing in, starting up, and managing a business. The idea is to give students all those opportunities while they’re students. Are all four of those elements currently part of every MBA student’s experience, or is this being developed?  [5:15] The only part that is currently required is advising experience (through our MAP program). The rest are available as elective or co-curricular opportunities. What Dean DeRue envisions is building it out – working with companies that envision our students helping manage their companies, etc. You mentioned MAP, one of Ross’s signature programs. What differentiates this program from other b-schools’ experiential learning/consulting projects?  [7:00] MAP is a mini consulting project during the last quarter of the first year. Students work full time with three to five other students on a real world consulting challenge. It’s a seven-week project, working full time with an organization to help solve a business challenge. Students select projects based on their interests, career plans, geographical interests, etc. It comes right before the internship, so it also helps them hit the ground running when they start their internship. What makes it unique is that it’s full time, and at seven weeks it’s almost the length of an internship. The breadth of the projects we offer also sets the program apart. More than half of the projects are outside the US. Can you give an example of a project?  [9:40] One cool example was a cruise line that needed help figuring out how to increase on-board revenue, as well as improve the onboarding process. They brought the student team onboard to observe every step of the process. We have many market entry projects – how do we break into a new market with a given product. There are projects in Israel, Ireland, etc. A lot of tech projects, an increasing number of social impact projects, and startups. We work with alums to help us source projects. We’re looking for projects that will really interest the students. Dean DeRue has also announced lifelong tuition free executive education for grads. Why?  [11:55] His goal is to make a Ross degree a long-term relationship – not just a two-year transaction. We’ll have online opportunities, onsite courses in Michigan, etc. Business and business education changes rapidly, so lifelong learning is really important. Ross is located in Ann Arbor Michigan, not far from Detroit. It gives Ross alumni fantastic access to the auto industry and the U.S. industrial heartland. But some potential applicants may be concerned that Ross’ location is a disadvantage when compared to other major business centers. Can you address that concern?  [14:00] That perception couldn’t be more wrong. Our biggest recruiter last year was Amazon. We have a global alumni network, and the majority of our grads go to NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle. We find that the bulk of our US students come from California, NY, the DC area, and Illinois. So geographically, it’s pretty reflective of where MBA students come from in general. We say, â€Å"Go Blue, go anywhere.† Recruiting is changing – the hiring path is more splintered. How is Ross adapting?  [16:40] You’re right – it’s changing. It used to be all about campus recruiting. Now students have to be able to manage their own career search. That starts Day 1 at Ross – we prepare students for the career search process for different industries. One part of that is Functional Accountability Career Teams (FACT), small groups of students grouped by their functional career interest (consulting, tech, etc.). Each team is led by an MBA2 coach who’s already gone through the internship process, and keeps them on track week by week: contacting recruiters, working on resumes, following up, preparing for interviews, etc. Our community is a pay-it-forward community: coaches volunteer to review resumes, do mock interviews, etc., to help them navigate the recruiting process. What about students interested in entrepreneurship?  [19:25] I’d love to give an example of a recent project! Sneaks by Jordana was funded by our Zell Founders Fund. She produces custom high-end sneakers – her customers include celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande. She got $100K in seed funding from the Zell Founders Fund, which is administered by MBA2s. How does Ross’ mission – Develop Leaders who Make a positive Difference in the World –   influence admissions decisions?  [21:00] I lead with our mission in presentations – it’s something very important to us and what our culture is about. How do they make a positive difference in the organizations they’re part of (in their work, academics, community, etc.)? That can come out in essays, in the rec letters, and in the interview. People who will fit in our community are people who want to do, and want to make a difference wherever they are. What makes an application stand out for you?  [21:55] People who really seem to know what they want and know themselves, and articulate it well. People who connect the dots and show clarity of vision. We’re looking for people who are self-aware – where it’s clear they’ve done the introspection the application deserves and needs. What can people invited to interview at Ross expect?  [22:45] If you interview off-campus with an alum, it’s one on one. If you come for an on-campus interview, it’s more intensive. In addition to the one-on-one interview, there’s our group exercise. It’s a full-day experience including meetings with students and class visits. You mentioned the team exercise. What do you learn from this exercise that you don’t get from the application or from the individual interview?  [24:40] You’re put together with four to five other interviewees, and given a set of random words (chosen out of a bag). Within the team, you have to come up with a business challenge and a business solution including those words. Beyond the presentation you make to the panel, it’s about how you work together to solve a problem: how you communicate, how you work with new people, how you handle a challenge. These are all situations and skills students will need in business school. And it’s also a type of exercise more companies are using during recruiting. Any advice for Round 2 applicants?  [26:50] If your test score isn’t the best it can be, consider one last retake. Recheck your resume to make sure it really tells us something about you and the impact you had. Really polish up your essays. Answer the question we ask and answer authentically – give it to someone to make sure it sounds like you. So many people ask: â€Å"How can I differentiate myself? There are so many people just like me!† But there really aren’t – no one else has done exactly what you have in the way you’ve done it and accomplished what you have. If you just tell your story, you are going to be unique. People fall into the trap of thinking, â€Å"They’ll want to hear this,† and we get essays that all sound the same. Be yourself. Any advice for people planning to apply next year?  [30:30] Do your research now! Research schools before talking to students and admissions directors. You’re not putting your best foot forward if you don’t know the basics. Start the test prep process early – especially if you don’t have a quantitative degree as an undergrad. You need to show you can do the work. Strive to make a positive impact in your current position. What’s changed at Ross since you’ve been there (and since you were there as a student)?  [32:45] Our students are doing amazing things, here and around the world. Our facilities are amazing. The Code Of The Honor Code System - 790 Words

The honor code is a set of rules used by high schools and colleges to prevent the students from cheating, stealing and plagiarizing. The honor code puts the responsibility of maintaining academic integrity on the student’s shoulders instead of those of the faculty. Ideally, this code works well because the students are trusted, monitored and held accountable by their peers. Unfortunately, in reality the honor code is not successful and actually allows for more cheating. Rockhurst High school is better at preventing misconduct by enforcing stricter policies than the honor system. The honor code should no longer be implemented in Rockhurst High School because it is not necessary. The honor code system basically tells students that is up to them to decide whether it is acceptable to cheat or not. Although, most people would hope that the students at Rockhurst possess enough integrity to know that cheating is wrong, it only takes a few â€Å"cheater-types† to undermine the â€Å"honest-types†.(Source C). As Rutgers University professor Donald McCabe said â€Å"honor codes don’t always work. Their success depends on a culture of academic integrity†. The students need to have an expectation that cheating is not tolerated by their peers. Unfortunately, the students at Rockhurst High school do tolerate cheating. P.E. Sports help Younger Kids Build Character Going to school is not only about learning and making good grades. It is also about making relationships and learning how to handle situations. In most schools, sports are a way to learn these things by participating and making the best of it. Even if one is not good and they always get picked last, sports can have an impact on their life to get better and shock their classmates. In the article â€Å"I pity those children forced to do Zumba at school,† Jemima Lewis makes an ineffective argument through her methods of handling opposing points, giving good sources, and writing an argument that is clearly understood. Jemima Lewis, who hated sports in school, makes the argument that all schools should ban sports in PE class because they are a waste of time, especially if someone is not good at them. She was the kid that was always picked last and hoped that the ball never came her way. Description of family: The Grape family lives in Pandora, Iowa. Gilbert is a Caucasian male, age 24. The presenting problem is grief and trauma due to his father committing suicide. His mom Bonnie was especially affected by the death of Gilbert’s father and due to this has become agoraphobic (7yrs). She has developed a food addiction, with clinical depression. With Bonnie’s clinical depression it has led her to withdraw from the family, creating a risk factor of instability in the family. This has created new social norms, rules and dynamics (unstable functioning level 1) (Vanhook, 2014). Urban Planning/Development For my topic I chose to research Urban Planning which also goes hand in hand with Urban Development. Urban Planning integrates land use planning and transportation planning to improve the economic and social environments of communities, where Urban Development is the actual process of taking these plans and putting them to work by the selling, leasing, building of land, buildings, stores, homes, etc. For my interview I contacted Dode Harvey, who has worked in, or owned a commercial real estate firm for over 30 years. Ranch development, and he now works for Real Estate Solutions based out of San Antonio, Texas. Because of his experience I have an owner’s point of view and not just an agent. Specialization In the world of Urban Development, Mr. Harvey’s specializes in urban re-development; meaning he takes property that has already been developed, but has been either run down or vacated, and brings it back to life. An example of urban re-development that Mr. Harvey gave me was the re-development of Houston Street in San Antonio. According to Mr. Harvey there was a strip of about eight blocks in the historic district of downtown San Antonio that was completely vacant and deteriorating, his company went and bought that eight block strip (about 20 buildings) for around twenty million dollars . They brought the buildings up to date and then turned around and brought several small businesses back into the area revitalizing a dying community. Educational Requirements In Mr. Harvey’s area of Urban Development there are just a couple of educational requirements, including receiving your real estate license and participating in continuing education. As far as formal education goes there are no requirements, though Mr. Harvey did recommend that you receive a college degree to help jump start you when coming into the commercial real estate field. He also recommended that if you do want to get a degree that will help you in the Urban Development to look into a degree in real estate development with a possible minor in finance. When I asked Mr. Harvey about the amount of continuing education he participates in, and/or recommends participating in every year I was surprised at the amount he gave. He told me that he recommends that you attend at least two major and a minimum of two to four minor seminars every year, along with the amount of continuing education classes required by the TRELC. Job Duties Mr. Harvey as a past owner, and current City Partner and Principal has many responsibilities throughout his normal work day, his higher ranking within the company does not remove any amount of work from his plate. When developing undeveloped or existing property there are several tasks you must consider, the first thing to consider when planning or developing property is the zoning of that property. If the piece of property he is trying to develop does not meet his zoning needs then he must go to the city and get the zoning changed for your property. If Mr. Harvey was trying to develop a previously undeveloped piece of land, he would then have to hire engineers to come in and â€Å"lay out† or design the land; he would need to have them plan out where sewer, electrical, and water lines would be going, as well as how the land would drain and so on. Gaining city approval would be the next step in his process, which in his words â€Å"you’ll take your plan to city hall the first time and they’ll tell you it’s not good enough, then you go back a second and sometimes a third time, until you’ve (got it right)†. Mr. Harvey then has to select the right real estate agency, whether it is residential or commercial. One of his last but most important duties in the office is to hire attorneys, whether they are working in his office, or they be working for him from an outside law office. Mr. Harvey told me that his agency hired out â€Å"Fulbright and Jaworsky† out of San Antonio, because â€Å"they are the best I’ve found†. Relation to Real Estate Practice There are many ways that Mr. Harvey’s job role ties into the practice of real estate. When most people think of real estate they typically just think of the buying and selling aspect of, but there is so much more than just buying and selling involved. Mr. Harvey not only has a salesperson but he also has to be knowledgeable of properties and companies around what you are trying to sell (Urban Planning), he needs to be able to do research and be able to determine which businesses, neighborhoods, etc. will be best fit in certain places. Mr. Harvey needs to be able to know which companies to try and bring into his properties, does he have enough space in his building to house a large chain corporation, or does he need to bring in a smaller local business to fill the spot, a lot of which again ties back to Urban Planning. Mr. Harvey has to be aware of many real estate laws while helping run Real Estate Solutions, such as zoning laws, and easements. Mr. Harvey dealt with easement issues while re-developing Houston Street, when a title search was done on one of the buildings he was developing it was discovered that â€Å"there was a pipeline that ran down the middle of the building, splitting the property in two†, which became a problem when trying to re-develop. Discrimination In the interview I asked Mr. Harvey â€Å"how often do you worry about discrimination in the workplace when dealing with clients and customers†; his response was â€Å"every second of every day†. Mr. Harvey said that discrimination is one of the main concerns in the workplace, they have to (as well as every other real estate agency) display the equal opportunity employer sign in their office, as well as â€Å"follow government guidelines, very strictly† because if they don’t they can face serious repercussions, even to the extent of being shut down. Mr. Harvey also told me that he and his co-workers also will attend discrimination workshops/seminars from time to time. When I asked Mr. Harvey if he had ever seen discrimination in the workplace he said â€Å"I have seen it before, but I can’t say when or where, and the sad part is even if it was unintentional or didn’t even happen, I have still seen people get their licenses suspended over it†. Additional Info I asked Mr. Harvey what the most common types of clients have been most common over his years as an Urban Developer? He responded with â€Å"I would say by far small business owners, at least 85% or so†, he also added that â€Å"small business is the driving force behind this country, and the bureaucracy that is state and nation government is killing the driving force in this country†. I also inquired about the commission of agents and brokers to which I got a response of â€Å"there are no set fees, it’s up to negotiation†, he also told me â€Å"the IRS makes a claim on income tax that every agent charges a minimum of 6% commission†, this is very untrue and has become a problem. He also told me that â€Å"brokers can make set fees†, by which he means brokers can ask for a certain percent to be paid to them regardless of what the agent is receiving. The last thing I asked Mr. Harvey was â€Å"what laws or barriers do you typically run into when trying to place certain types of businesses in certain area? † he told me there were several, but the major ones being â€Å"zoning laws and what regulations set by local and national governments†. Question: Describe about the Business Tradition for Traditional Jewish Customs. Answer: This passage is extracted from the book of Matthew. The author of the Gospel of Matthew is not mentioned in the text. Papias of Helepolis who was an apostolic father and a bishop is the one who began the tradition that Matthew the apostle was the author. Scholars believe that Matthew was probably a Jew who had knowledge of non-traditional and traditional Jewish customs. He clearly understood the legal matters being debated in his time concerning the scriptures (Steen, 2016, p.339). The gospel of Matthew is believed by most scholars to have been composed between AD 80 and 90. Matthew belonged to the community of Christians who were part of the bigger Jewish community. Conflict arose between Matthews community and other groups of the Jews. The root of the conflict was that Matthewss group believed in Jesus Christ as the Messiah and that the laws would be interpreted by him authoritatively since Christ rose from the dead and he has divine authority. This formed the context of his writing with an aim to bring to right various issues that brought controversy (Collins, 2015, p.322). The purpose of this passage was to teach the people who were following Jesus on the various issues they had no clarity. This was during the days that Jesus had begun his ministry in Galilee. Many of the people in the multitude thought that the gospel Jesus taught came to set aside the law of the prophets. Jesus was able to know their thinking. He told them that he had not come to abolish the law. Jesus clarifies to them that he was not the end of the law but had merely come to fulfil it. Various themes are brought out in this passage. The themes are murder, reconciliation, and adultery. Jesus reminds the multitude of the law that warned against murder since anyone who would commit murder would face judgment. He taught the people who were following him the importance of reconciling with those who had wronged them. He goes ahead to expound on this issue by telling them that if one was offering sacrifices and remembers that he has something against his brother, it was important for one to go and be reconciled with him first and come and offer the sacrifice later. Another major theme is warning against adultery. Jesus explains that even the act of looking at the woman lustfully makes a man commit adultery in his heart. There are parts of this passage that are not relevant to us today. The act of offering sacrifices was performed by the Jewish people that Jesus was addressing. Today we no longer offer burning sacrifices. It was possible for the Jewish people to settle matters before appearing to the court and in case the affected parties would agree; then no offense would be held against the offender. Today that custom is not applicable since most matters are settled in court. The Jewish tradition of cutting of various body parts that made people sin is not relevant today. For instance, in one's handmade one sin it was advisable to cut it off than for the rest of the body to be thrown into hell. The passage addresses principles that are eternal and still have relevance in our lives today. Righteousness is an essential principle that is brought out. Jesus warns the multitude not to be like the Pharisees and the scribes who thought that righteousness was to be expressed outwardly. The scribes taught of the law, and the Pharisees followed the law strictly. Their righteousness was not out of a purified heart as God desires. This is important to us today because the Bible records that God requires us to have that devotion of the heart for us to enter the kingdom of heaven. The theme of adultery and reconciliation are also relevant to us today because the Bible teaches that one will be thrown in the fires of hell if he commits adultery and does not reconcile with his brother. The passage teaches about the unchanging nature of God. He is the one who gave the law to Moses, and he expected people to abide by it. The coming of Jesus does not mean that people should not follow the law. God is faithful to his word, and he does not change his mind on whatever he commands. God expects us to follow his commands faithfully without compromise because that is what it means to be in a relationship with him. He desires that we submit to whatever his word teaches about the various life principles. There are topics contained in this passage that is relevant to people of today. The passage teaches about reconciling with those who have wronged us. In our daily interactions with people, many are times we find ourselves defaming other people. It is important for us to seek for forgiveness so that our real relationship may be restored and that our hearts will be right with God. Righteousness from the heart is also emphasized in this passage. We are not supposed to pursue a righteousness that is outwardly shown but that righteousness from within the heart. This passage records that no one will enter the kingdom of heaven without sincere righteousness from the heart. The passage is very relevant in my life since it explains various principles that are essential for right living. It talks about the importance of keeping the laws written by the prophets. These rules apply to the life issues that I encounter in life. The passage teaches about the importance of reconciliation and hence it enables me to seek forgiveness whenever I wrong someone. It motivates me to pursue righteousness from the heart since that is the one that God requires from me so as to be in a good relationship with him. The act of murder is explained to be followed by judgment and from this I get to understand that God despises this act. The command against committing adultery is also contained in this topic, and I get to learn that committing this sin has consequences that are unpleasant. Language of Performing Arts Essay Example Paper Language of Performing Arts Essay Introduction Performing Arts is a way of expressing ideas, emotions and thoughts to all areas of society using any capability of the body as a tool. In this essay I am going to discuss they ways in which I achieved this idea through the practical work produced in music, dance and drama modules. For each module a stimulus was given which led to the devise-rehearse-performance process. A final performance was then created integrating all three arts using another given stimulus.During the Drama module we were given a poem called ‘Seven Poems’ written by Antonin Artaud. We were to devise a piece of drama not only stimulated by this poem but also in the style of the writer. We made our own notes on the language of the poem and interpreted it in our own way; this meant no two pieces of drama would be the same as we all have individual ideas and opinions. However when we came together in our groups we discussed our notes and points and came to a group decision about what we thought the poem meant and what it represented before beginning to develop thoughts, actions and finally a narrative.The piece was to be in the style of Artaud. This meant a very surrealistic piece with little dialogue, used just as a mode of communication. Instead we would use our bodies and physicality to communicate our message to audience; this places emphasis on a variety of language sorts – physical, verbal and visual. His work was very much based on ritual primitivism and releasing the dark forces of the soul and seeing the dark side of human nature. We needed to create a piece exploring all these points and more.My group began by creating a physical motif as our starting point; we incorporated the idea of ritualism by having someone acting as a cross and another person acting as a crucified person being attached to this cross. I sat in the middle of the acting space rocking back and forth giving rhythm to the scene. The distant proxemics between the ‘cross’ and me showed the distant relationship between the characters we were beginning to create, at that time. This was successful as it gave us an idea of where to go next without tying us down to a script so early in the devising process.We introduced music to the first motif by use of our own voices, we felt this would give a more surreal effect and we had more freedom to create the appropriate sounds. Here we introduced a few lines of stylised dialogue, we scripted these so we had direction and to help us remember it in the future. We extracted these lines from the poem showing our knowledge and interpretation.The crucified member of the group became a temptress and danced her way around the cross with very strong physicality, we wanted to give the impression of sexuality as we saw it in an extract from † Strange Fish† by DV8, a play by Artaud himself, where a lot of dance is used. We wanted to show a big contrast in proxemics here to show how two seemingly unrelated characters have su ddenly become involved with each other. A few lines of dialogue were used only to communicate to the audience.The final scene shows us all crawling to the very front of the stage and banging our hands, on either side, on the floor. This again builds up tension, but the audience are shocked when all that happens is that we show a gesture that has been repeated throughout the piece and shows good physicality.We spent 25% of each lesson talking and the rest practical, this was to make suggestions of new ideas and talk about any research we had done since the last lesson regarding our drama piece and to discuss costume and props or any problems we had.We individually worked on our characterisation and experimented with any effects that we might want to use. We wrote our own script for our own dialogue so these could be developed in more detail individually.Basically we just ran through it over and over again. The significance of this repetition was to familiarise ourselves with the mate rial and running order, and to check whether it all ran smoothly. I found this helpful and after a rigorous rehearsal session there was an obvious difference in quality and the timing was much better.Our final performance went to plan and we received extremely good feedback from the audience. They commented on the temptress’s strong physicality on the cross, how fantastic the dialogue was, how the physical theatre convention really worked especially when eating the â€Å"being† from inside me and how at this point all of my group’s performances were very strong. They talked of how our characterisation was very strong and how the costume assisted the overall performance.We were given a stimulus of a painting called â€Å"King of the Castle† by Reuben Mednikoff for the dance module. In groups we brainstormed notes, ideas and first impressions made about the image, before beginning to develop thoughts and movements.We wanted to create a dance with a variety of different styles to show our knowledge and appreciation of dance. Christopher Bruce had influenced us, as we had studied a dance choreographed by him called â€Å"Swansong†. We had also studied â€Å"Strong Language† by Richard Alston and so took influence of relationships conveyed in dance from him also. We wanted to show the idea of a child’s hesitation between leaving the mother’s womb, entering life and staying inside it. We raised the questions â€Å"shall I stay in or go out†, and â€Å"where does my real power lie†. As we felt that is what the picture represented.We introduced a hypnotic music, called â€Å"Queen Adreena† this gave the impression of innocence and had no regular beat so was easy to improvise a dance project to. We started to devise a motif that would be the main dance idea, the â€Å"child† and the â€Å"mother/womb† danced in unison with very close proxemics to show harmony, the dynamics were e xtremely light and gentle; again to show innocence. The two people who represented â€Å"life† or the â€Å"outer world† created a different motif, again in unison and also mirroring one another, to show that they are also harmonised, the dynamics here were slightly sharper as it symbolizes a new, almost â€Å"scary† concept. Finally â€Å"temptation† created a motif simply with gestures with heavy, sharp and strong dynamics to suggest weight and anger. Dynamics were used throughout to distinguish difference between characters. The juxtaposition on stage created chaos and confusion on stage linking to the questions raised by the picture.A crawling action was used for the temptation to travel across stage to the child and mother/womb this suggested a being possibly not human. He breaks the child and the mother/womb apart with use of falling and turning to show a definite separation and immediate confusion of where the child belongs. Temptation leads the ch ild to life/the outer world character where the motif created is repeated, however we developed it by adding an extra character, who moves in canon to show a clear leader (life) and a follower (child), the levels are changed as the child sinks to ground level to show how little it is compared to the outer world and the movements to get out of the motif were changed as the child breaks free, ruining the bond of life and heads back to the womb with circular pathways to again suggest confusion.The womb/mother and child repeated their motif again with developed ideas; the placement on stage was changed, as was the direction and the movements to get in and out of motif. Suddenly there is break in the balance held at the end of the motif as the inevitable has come, the child is ready to leave the womb. Circular pathways and perplexing directions are used, filling the whole of the dancing space signifying confusion from the child’s perspective.We held a still for a few seconds, wher e the whole group was very close and orderly showing the power of the child, as it grows. One by one we moved away and stood in a linear position and danced a short sequence in very linear pathways, moving forwards to again show power. The dynamics are strong, sharp and heavy to show strength. The final still was used to show unity, as we all link into one and show all the things that make the child, with very close contact to show a final intimate relationship. It gives the audience the impression of power and security.We individually, or in small groups worked on our motifs, dynamics, actions and relationships and experimented with any effects that we might want to use. We did this so that each section of dance could be developed and perfected individually.Our main rehearsal technique was repetition. The significance of this was to familiarise ourselves with the material and running order, and to check whether it all ran smoothly. If there was a problem with a specific area we dis cussed it and focused on it so we could perfect that area. We also had the opportunity to gain feedback from one member of the group who was unable to dance due to injury. We listened to her constructive criticism and worked on the areas she suggested.Our final performance in the dance module was successful, however there was room for improvement our motifs could have been developed and varied in more original ways, audience feedback show they thought there was limited dynamic range which was possibly limited by the music choice, showing the importance of music within a dance piece. I felt we could have experimented more with extremities of dynamics. The audience however felt the placement on stage for each group was carefully considered and there was a varied use of direction. There were varied groupings on stage, which created a visual impact for the audience, and there was a good use of contact and support.We had a very open stimulus for our final module of music. We looked at a performance by â€Å"Stomp† by Luke Cresswell. Stomp is a rhythm-based group that combine simple rhythms with everyday objects used as instruments. We were instructed to create a piece in their style; this meant a very rhythmic piece with possibly some sort of theme and links with dance movements to add interest to the audience.In our group we each started to improvise and develop rhythms using everyday objects such as classroom chairs and dustbin lids to create unusual timbres. A strong accent was kept on the first beat to keep the rest of the beats in time. The rest of the group used variations around this steady pulse to create a melody that was repeated throughout the piece. We wanted to show a big contrast in texture to create tension and so took the pace and the volume very low with two members of the group hitting the legs of a chair with a beater alone so very little was heard, then there was an explosion where the texture became very different with many layers of sou nd.We introduced dance movements very late in the devising process, we wanted to add interest for the audience to the performance rather than them just watching us hit things. We included simple turns and jump and enhanced the texture and timbre by adding voice sound effects also, with simple shouts at important points in the piece.As we devised the piece early we had plenty of time to rehearse and perfect areas, we used repetition as our main technique as in the past it has obviously been the most successful, and trial and error where we felt appropriate, which worked well.I felt our music performance was successful because we thought long and hard about specific decisions relating to melody, harmony, texture, timbre and rhythm knowing that these would make the music interesting for an audience. Our whole piece had been strongly influenced by a piece of rhythm music we looked at as a class, called â€Å"Clapping Music† by Steve Reich, it used a technique called phasing and b elow is the rhythm pattern used. US expansion essays America acquired a lot of land over a short period time starting from about 1783 to about 1848. America did so in a few different ways such as war, treaty, annexation and purchase. In this essay I will discuss some of the different states we gained and how we gain them. The original thirteen colonies were acquired by a battle or a war known as The American Revolution. The Americans fought Britain for freedom, rights and land. After a successful battle the British were forced to sign the Treaty of Paris in 1783. This treaty gave America the thirteen colonies and the other side of the Mississippi river. In 1803 the leader of France, Napoleon offered the U.S. to purchase Louisiana. Although the Constitution made no provision for the acquisition of new land, Jefferson decided to go with a more loose constitution and called this a treaty. The Louisiana Purchase was the greatest real estate deal in world history, because it doubled the U.S. in size and it only cost about 15 million dollars in gold. After that in 1818 and 1819 Spain sold Florida to the U.S. and we just took west Florida with it. In 1842 a treaty with Britain gives us northern Minnesota in which we later discover is full of extremely valuable that boosted America's economy. For about nine years Texas wasn't part of any country and very much wanted to become part of the U.S. be we kept on refusing because of slavery abolishment in the north. In 1845 the U.S. decided it would allow Texas to be part of U.S. territory so we had the Texas Annexation. In 1846 after a successful victory over Britain in a battle which was fought over a very large piece of land, the Americans came to a compromise with the British. America decided that it would take Oregon Country by treaty and allow the British to keep the northern half of the land that was fought over. Joan of England, Queen of Sicily About Joan of England Known for: daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England, Joan of England lived through kidnapping and shipwreck Occupation: English princess, Sicilian queen Dates: October 1165 - September 4, 1199 Also known as: Joanna of Sicily More About Joan of England: Born in Anjou, Joan of England was the second youngest of the children of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England. Joan was born in Angers, grew up mainly in Poitiers, at the Fontevrault Abbey, and at Winchester. In 1176, Joans father agreed to her marriage to William II of Sicily. As was typical for royal daughters, the marriage served political purposes, as Sicily was looking for a closer alliance with England.   Her beauty impressed the ambassadors, and she traveled to Sicily, with a stop in Naples when Joan became ill. They arrived in January, and William and Joan were married in Sicily in February of 1177. Their only son, Bohemond, did not survive infancy; the existence of this son is not accepted by some historians. When William died in 1189 without an heir to succeed him, the new king of Sicily, Tancred, denied Joan her lands, and then imprisoned Joan. Joans brother, Richard I, on his way to the Holy Land for a crusade, stopped in Italy to demand Joans release and the full repayment of her dowry. When Tancred resisted, Richard took a monastery, by force, and then took the city of Messina. It was there that Eleanor of Aquitaine landed with Richards chosen bride, Berengaria of Navarre. There were rumors that Philip II of France wanted to marry Joan; he visited her in the convent in which she was staying.   Philip was the son of her mothers first husband. This would likely have raised objections from the church because of that relationship.   Tancred returned Joans dowry in money rather than giving her control of her lands and property. Joan took charge of Berengaria while her mother returned to England.   Richard set sail for the Holy Land, with Joan and Berengaria on a second ship. The ship with the two women was stranded in Cyprus after a storm. Richard narrowly rescued his bride and sister from Isaac Comnenus. Richard imprisoned Isaac and sent his sister and his bride to Acre, following shortly. In the Holy Land, Richard proposed that Joan marry Saphadin, also known as Malik al-Adil, the brother of the Muslim leader, Saladin. Joan and the proposed groom both objected on the basis of their religious differences. Returning to Europe, Joan married Raymond VI of Toulouse. This, too, was a political alliance, as Joans brother Richard was concerned that Raymond had an interest in Aquitaine. Joan gave birth to a son, Raymond VII, who later succeeded his father. A daughter was born and died in 1198. Pregnant for another time and with her husband away, Joan barely escaped a rebellion on the part of the nobility. Because her brother Richard had just died, she could not seek his protection. Instead, she made her way to Rouen where she found support from her mother. Joan entered Fontevrault Abbey, where she died giving birth. She took the veil just before she died. The newborn son died a few days later. Joan was buried at Fontevrault Abbey.
